Short answer: For a desert camp in Qatar, pack food that needs no fridge and is easy to share: dates, mixed nuts and dried fruit, a closed jar of honey, a little saffron for karak and Arabic coffee, and fresh bread for the morning. Keep chocolate dates and honeycomb in a cool box, and keep every jar tightly closed against sand and ants.
Why camp food needs a little planning
Winter camping is one of the best parts of the year in Qatar. Families and friends head to the dunes for nights around the fire, long chats and simple food. But the days can still be warm, the nights get cool, and sand gets into everything. The best camp snacks are the ones that travel well, last a few days and can be shared straight from the box – exactly the things that have always been part of a Gulf majlis.
The camp snack list
| What to pack | Why it works at camp | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Dates | No fridge needed, perfect with coffee | Pack in a closed box, not an open plate |
| Chocolate dates | A treat for guests and children | Keep in the cool box – chocolate softens in the sun |
| Almonds, pistachios, walnuts | Light, filling, easy to share | Small jars or zip bags, one per tent |
| Dried figs and apricots | Sweet snack that keeps for days | Mix with nuts for a quick camp tray |
| Honey | No fridge needed, great on hot bread | Keep the lid tight and use a dry spoon |
| Honeycomb | A special breakfast for the group | Keep in the cool box, serve on a plate |
| Saffron | Turns karak and Arabic coffee into a treat | A small jar is enough for a whole trip |
Saffron karak by the fire
Nothing says camp night like a pot of karak. Boil black tea with crushed cardamom in water for a few minutes, add milk and sugar to taste, then drop in a small pinch of saffron threads and let it simmer gently until the colour turns golden. Pour through a strainer into small cups. For Arabic coffee, add a few saffron threads with the cardamom. More ideas in our guide on how to use saffron in machboos, karak and Arabic coffee.
Breakfast in the dunes
Morning at camp is the time for honey. Warm bread on the fire, then pour Sidr honey over it, or set out a piece of honeycomb with cheese, dates and tea. If you have a small pan, sweet balaleet with a little honey on top is a camp favourite. See more ideas in honey in a Qatari breakfast.
Packing tips for sand and sun
- Close everything. Sand and ants find open jars fast – keep lids tight between uses.
- Use the shade. Keep the food box inside the tent or under the car, never in direct sun.
- One cool box for soft things. Chocolate dates, honeycomb, cheese and milk go here.
- Dry spoons only. A wet spoon in the honey jar can spoil the taste.
- Bring a tray. A simple tray of dates, nuts and dried fruit keeps guests happy all evening.

Honey is not suitable for infants under 12 months. Whole nuts can be a choking risk for young children.

Frequently asked questions
Does honey need a fridge at camp?
No. Keep the jar tightly closed, in the shade, and always use a dry spoon. Honeycomb is better in the cool box so it stays firm.
Will chocolate dates melt in the desert?
The chocolate can soften in warm sun. Keep them in a cool box and take out only what you will serve. Plain dates travel more easily.
How much saffron do I need for one pot of karak?
A small pinch of threads is enough for a family pot. Add it near the end and let it simmer gently so the colour and aroma come out.
