Short answer: Medjool dates are large, soft and rich, with a deep caramel taste – ideal for stuffing, chocolate coating and desserts. Sukkari dates are smaller, golden and very sweet, with a texture that melts in the mouth – ideal with Arabic coffee and as an everyday date. Both are excellent; the right choice depends on how you want to eat them.
What are Medjool dates?
Medjool is one of the largest date varieties in the world. The fruit is plump, with thin, slightly wrinkled skin and a soft, moist flesh. The taste is rich and caramel-like. Because of their size and soft texture, Medjool dates are the favourite choice for stuffing with nuts and for coating in chocolate, as in our Tamra chocolate-coated Medjool dates.
What are Sukkari dates?
Sukkari ("sugary") is a famous variety from Al-Qassim in Saudi Arabia. The dates are golden-amber and smaller than Medjool. Many are sold half-dry (sometimes called "mufattal"), with a crisp-soft texture that dissolves like sugar. They are the classic partner for Arabic coffee across the Gulf. Try our Tamra Sukkari dates.

How to choose good dates
- Look at the skin. Some wrinkles are natural, especially on Medjool. Avoid dates that look dusty, sticky with crystals or mouldy.
- Feel the texture. Medjool should be soft and bend easily; Sukkari can be soft or half-dry, but never hard like a stone.
- Smell them. Fresh dates smell sweet and pleasant – a sour or fermented smell is a bad sign.
- Buy from a seller who knows the variety. A good seller can tell you exactly which dates you are getting and where they come from.
How to store dates
Keep dates in a closed container away from heat and sunlight. In warm countries, soft dates like Medjool keep best in the fridge, and can be frozen for longer storage. Let them come back to room temperature before serving. Chocolate-coated dates should be kept cool so the chocolate does not soften. More tips in storing food in hot weather.

Frequently asked questions
Which is sweeter, Medjool or Sukkari?
Both are sweet. Sukkari tastes more sugary, while Medjool has a deeper caramel sweetness.
Why are Medjool dates more expensive?
They are large, need careful handling and much of each harvest is sold as premium fruit, so the price is usually higher per kilo.
Can I freeze dates?
Yes. Put them in a closed container or bag; they keep their texture well and thaw quickly at room temperature.
