Kashmir Honey: Types, Taste and What Makes It Special

Short answer: "Kashmir honey" usually means honey produced in the mountains, valleys and foothills of Kashmir and the surrounding region of northern Pakistan. The area has a wide range of altitudes and plants, so it produces several very different honeys – from the rich, dark Sidr (Ber) honey to the pale, mild Acacia. Each type is named after the main flowers the bees visited.

Why this region is known for honey

  • Varied landscape. Within a short distance you find hot plains, green foothills and high mountain valleys, each with its own flowering season.
  • Distinct flowering seasons. Beekeepers move hives through the year to follow the bloom – mustard fields in late winter, acacia trees in spring, Ber (Sidr) trees in autumn.
  • Long beekeeping tradition. Many families have kept bees for generations. Our own family has been in the honey trade since 1985.

The main types of Kashmir honey

Sidr (Ber) honey

Made from the flowers of the Ber tree (Ziziphus), known in Arabic as Sidr. It is thick, amber to dark, with a rich, warm taste and a slightly caramel finish. It is one of the most prized honeys in the Gulf and is often given as a gift. See our Sidr honey →

Acacia honey

In Kashmir this usually comes from the black locust tree (Robinia), commonly called "acacia". It is very pale, clear and mild, with a light floral sweetness, and it stays liquid for a long time. Popular with children and people who prefer a gentle taste. See Acacia honey →

Mustard honey

Collected from yellow mustard fields in the plains. It is light in colour, with a distinctive, slightly sharp aroma, and it crystallizes quickly into a creamy, spreadable texture. See Mustard honey →

Clover honey

Smooth, light-golden and floral – an easy everyday honey for tea, yoghurt and baking. See Clover honey →

Eucalyptus honey

Medium amber with a fresh, slightly herbal note that many people enjoy in warm drinks. See Eucalyptus honey →

How to choose a good Kashmir honey

  • Ask for the flower source. A trustworthy seller can tell you the type (Sidr, Acacia, Mustard…) and the season it was harvested.
  • Buy from people who know the producers. Purity is best checked by lab testing and by a reliable supply chain – home "tests" with water or fire are not reliable. Read real vs fake honey.
  • Expect natural differences. Colour and thickness can change slightly between harvests – that is normal for a natural product.
  • Do not judge by crystallization. Mustard honey crystallizes fast, acacia very slowly – both can be pure. See why honey crystallizes.

Honey is not suitable for infants under 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sidr honey the same as Ber honey?

Yes. Sidr is the Arabic name and Ber is the name used in Pakistan and India for trees of the Ziziphus family. The honey from their flowers is called Sidr honey or Ber honey.

Why is Kashmir Sidr honey more expensive than regular honey?

Ber trees flower for a short season, the yield per hive is limited, and the honey is in high demand in the Gulf. Read more in what you pay for in Sidr honey.

Which Kashmir honey is the mildest?

Acacia honey – it is pale, light and gently sweet.
